The Sentence-Length Example
Sometimes, you need more than just a word or phrase to illustrate an
idea. In such cases, try giving an example in a sentence or two. The
example should be a specific, detailed illustration of the general idea
you are discussing, not just a vague restatement.
Example 1: Examples in a Sentence or Two
Idea + vague restatement: The new disc jockey on the morning
show is really obnoxious. He has an unpleasant attitude that
makes listening to his show a bad experience.
Idea + specific example: The new disc jockey on the morning
show is really obnoxious. He tries to humiliate listeners who call in,
and his jokes border on the offensive.
Example 2: Examples in a Sentence or Two
Idea + vague restatement: The new grocery store has added
whimsical touches to some of its departments. It’s enjoyable to
shop in a store that is entertaining.
