Internet access gives average people an open door to an incredible
array of free resources that would have been unimaginable a
generation or two ago. Thirty years ago, people relied on their
physicians for health advice. Today, the family physician’s advice is
often augmented by that of health-related websites such as WebMD or
Mayo Clinic, resources that would have seemed miraculous a generation
ago. Fifty years ago, news was served up at regular intervals through
print editions of newspapers and scheduled radio or television news
broadcasts. Today, news is available twenty-four hours a day from
news sites such as CNN, MSNBC, or Fox, with updates provided
instantly as the news happens. The Internet has also changed our
perspective on finances. In the past, people seeking financial advice
might go to their banker or to a trusted relative. Today, sites such
as The Simple Dollar or Kiplinger provide comprehensive and detailed
advice on saving or spending. Finding health information, news, and
financial advice is much easier in the age of the Internet.
