                                  any necessary background?

                             2. Does the thesis clearly state whether the essay

will discuss causes (reasons), effects (results), or

                                  both?

remind the reader that another cause or effect will

be discussed through skillful use of transitions

                                  (another reason for . . . , a second effect of . . .).

                             4. Do the details in each body paragraph clearly

describe the cause or effect? Are the details

                                  convincing?
                             5. Does the conclusion bring the reader back to a

thesis-level overall view of the subject and

                                  reinforce the cause or effect?
