Take Notes from Your Sources

Once you have evaluated your sources and thoroughly read your

source material, you are ready to organize your paper. Make a brief

outline of the points you will make and the source or sources you will

use to support each point. Then, take notes from your sources,

choosing the material that most effectively supports the point you are
               making in your paragraph.

The first step in taking notes from your sources is to gather the

information you will need for your Works Cited list. There is no more

painful experience for a researcher than to discover, after the paper is
written, that this basic information on the source has somehow

disappeared. A list of information needed for your Works Cited list

               follows.

               For all sources

                    Author

Title (If the source is contained within a larger work, make a note of

both titles. For example, if your source is an article in a magazine,
note the title of the article and the title of the magazine.)

                    Date of publication

Volume and issue numbers for periodicals

Month, day (if available), and year for magazines or newspapers
