Advice for Online Researchers
Get Ready to Go Online
Research used to mean poring through stacks of books and
periodicals. Today, it usually means sitting in front of a
computer screen. Even print sources must be located through
online catalogs, indexes to periodicals, and databases. Even if
you are comfortable using a computer, these resources may
seem alien to you at first. But don’t feel intimidated. Everyone
has to start somewhere—even librarians who are experts at
finding information on the computer were beginners once. If
you need help, do not hesitate to ask questions. As a
researcher, part of your job is to ask questions and to seek help
when you need it.
Find a Friend
It’s a good idea to find someone in class who will agree to be
your research partner. You don’t need an expert, nor do you
need someone who is working on the same topic. All you need
is someone who is willing to go through the process with you.
The two of you can work side by side and handle the rough
spots together.
Ask a Librarian
Librarians are experts in finding information, and they are there
to help. If you and your research partner need help, ask.
