Periods are also used to signal an appropriate abbreviation. Except
for abbreviations in courtesy titles—such as Mr., Ms., Dr., and Rev.
—used before proper names, do not abbreviate words in your
paragraphs and essays.
Examples of Periods to Denote
Abbreviations
James has an appt. with the dr. on Wed. afternoon.
James has an appointment with the doctor on Wednesday
afternoon.
James has an appointment with Dr. Davis on Wednesday
afternoon.
The Question Mark
A question mark is used at the end of a direct question.
What time are we leaving?
