Practice 24-3 Using Colons,

               Dashes, and Parentheses

Rewrite each of the following sentences as indicated, punctuating the

italicized portion of the sentence with a colon, a dash (or dashes), or

               parentheses.

                    1. Jeremy brought several items with him to the beach. He

brought a radio, a Frisbee, a beach towel, sunblock, and a

cooler filled with sandwiches and soft drinks.

Directions: Rewrite as one sentence, with a colon introducing
the list. Remove words as needed.

                    2. Tiana bought her textbook, Understanding Psychology,

                        secondhand for only $18.

Directions: Deemphasize the title of the textbook.

                    3. Professor Jones says that if he were stranded on a desert

island, he would need just one thing: a copy of the complete

                        works of Shakespeare.

Directions: Set off the restatement in an informal way rather

                        than a formal way.

                    4. The tie (the same one he wore every Friday) was black with

                        bright yellow happy faces.
