RE ALITY CHECK
Many Ways to Communicate
rica Komuro, one of many managers for an international book company,
sat at her desk looking at the next day’s schedule. In the morning, she
E would review the new organization chart for her department that would
appear in the employees’ manual. Later she would meet with two other
managers and her boss to resolve a conflict. She dreaded the shouting match
that was sure to occur between two people who never agreed on anything.
The afternoon would include interviewing a new employee and giving
her best worker instructions on how to perform a new assignment. Then
Erica would write a few business letters and e-mail messages. She also had
to finish her computerized monthly report for the division manager, which
would be sent over the local area network. If the morning meeting did not
drag on, Erica might also have time to return phone calls that came in while
she was dealing with a customer relations problem. Perhaps she could also
squeeze in a call to Sabrina in accounting to learn more about a rumor
regarding the sudden resignation of the vice president.
Just before leaving the office she flipped the calendar page ahead a few
days. In large letters she saw: “Meet with Mr. Nozaki.” She was not sure
how to deal with the major problems this manager was having running the
Tokyo office. At least she could recall a few Japanese words from earlier
days when her family lived in Kyoto.
As she closed the office door, she smiled and waved to the evening
cleaning person arriving for duty. On the way to her car she thought,
“Tomorrow will be a busy day.”
