CHAPTER CONCEPTS
• A manager performs four management functions on a regular basis—
planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling—and has authority
over other jobs and people.
• As first-level managers, supervisors are responsible for the day-to-day
activities of the company’s employees. One of their most important
tasks is to create a work environment that motivates employees to do
their best. They also serve as a communications link between employ-
ees and management.
• Every company needs a management information system to help man-
agers reduce the amount of time they spend on controlling activities.
Data must be collected, organized, and made available to managers so
they can make decisions quickly and efficiently.
• Effective problem solving involves identifying the problem, listing pos-
sible solutions, analyzing the possible solutions, and selecting the best
solution based on the results of the analysis.
