MAKE CONNECTIONS
25. Math The Neveau Corporation spent $8,937,250 on research last
year. It spent 30 percent on consumer research, 25 percent on pure
research, and the remainder on applied research. The company’s
annual sales for the last year were $297,550,000.
a. What percentage of sales did the company spend on research?
b. How much did the company spend on each of the three types of
research?
26. Research Join a team with several other students in your class. Your
teacher may assign you to a specific group and topic. Use the Inter-
net or your library to gather information on one of the following
topics: Dr. W. Edwards Deming, the Malcolm Baldrige National
Quality Award, the ISO, Total Quality Management, or Continuous
Quality Improvement. Prepare an oral report. Include slides devel-
oped with computer presentation software. Provide at least three
Internet addresses (URLs) where you found useful information on
the topic.
27. Writing Place yourself in the role of your city’s economic develop-
ment director. Evaluate your city against the criteria that manufac-
turers consider in locating their facilities. Write a letter that you
would use to convince a manufacturer to locate in your city.
28. Speaking Participate in a debate with other students in your class.
Your teacher will provide instructions on how the debate will be
organized. Do research to gather information in support of your
position. The two positions to be debated are:
a. Cities and states should encourage economic development and
provide better jobs for their citizens by reducing the amount
of regulation on where manufacturing businesses can locate.
b. Cities and states should increase the regulation on where
businesses can locate to protect the environment and its
citizens.
