CHAPTER CONCEPTS
• Human resources personnel perform the tasks that help a business keep
the skilled, productive, and satisfied employees it needs to succeed.
• The HR employment function involves all activities required to main-
tain an adequate number of qualified employees in the company. HR
is also responsible for wages and benefits, performance improvement,
employee relations, health and safety, performance management, em-
ployee assistance programs, and employment planning and research.
• Effective selection means hiring people with the right skills for each
job. Hiring people who do not meet specific job qualifications results
in high training costs, dissatisfied employees and customers, and
poor performance.
• Companies can retain good employees by offering opportunities for
promotion and transfer. Procedures are also needed to deal with em-
ployee discharges and layoffs.
• HR departments are responsible for understanding federal and state
employment laws and ensuring that the business complies with them.
• Employee diversity improves organizations by bringing a rich array
of ideas and perspectives to a company. Companies must be aware of
and follow laws related to equal opportunity and discrimination.
