APPLY WHAT YOU KNOW
19. Based on the Reality Check scenario at the beginning of the chapter,
which job would you choose if you were Patrick? What are the rea-
sons for your choice? Why is the other choice less desirable?
20. Businesses must be sure employees are satisfied with their jobs and
motivated to perform well. What are the most important activities
that human resources departments perform that you believe support
that goal? Justify your choices.
21. What would you like and dislike about the 360-degree feedback sys-
tem if your employer used it to evaluate your work performance?
22. Why should a company eliminate applicants who are careless and
make errors in completing an application even if they are otherwise
well qualified for a job?
23. In some businesses, experienced employees have a higher accident
rate than new employees. What actions would you recommend to
increase employee attention to safety and accident prevention?
24. If you were a manager, what steps would you take to create a work
environment that is diverse, expands employment opportunities,
and does not discriminate?
MAKE CONNECTIONS
25. Writing Think of a job that interests you and would fit your current
skills and education. Prepare a job description for the ideal job.
Then write an advertisement that a company could place in a news-
paper to recruit applicants for the job. Find examples and informa-
tion on the Internet and local newspapers if necessary. Share your
finished products with a classmate and ask for feedback on whether
the job description and ad provide clear and adequate information
for an applicant.
26. Role-Playing You are a manager meeting with a new employee who is
at the end of the six-week probationary period. You must discharge
the employee due to an attendance problem and the inability to
complete many work assignments on time. Ask another student to
play the role of the employee. Your goal is to have a positive meet-
ing to communicate the reasons for the termination and to encour-
age the person to work on the weaknesses for future jobs.
27. Visual Arts Identify a safety concern in your school that might result
in an accident that injures people or damages property. Prepare a
poster that encourages people to follow safe procedures related to
the safety concern.
28. Law Review newspapers and magazines to locate an article related
to the violation of employment law by an employer. Study the infor-
mation and write a one-page report on the issue. Describe the law
or laws related to the violation, the specific circumstances that led to
the violation, and the actions that were taken against the business if
the violation was proven.
