                        CHAPTER CONCEPTS

                        • The dramatic changes facing both traditional and new businesses pre-
sent challenges to both employees and managers. Human resources
personnel can help businesses respond to those changes by establish-
                           ing organizational development programs.

                        • Two important elements of an effective organizational development
program are improving work processes and building effective work-
ing relationships. The goal is to eliminate errors, improve quality,
                           and reduce costs.
                        • Successful businesses value their employees. They use job enlargement,
cross training, and job enrichment to improve employee satisfaction.

                        • Career development programs meet a company’s future employment
needs by systematically preparing current employees for future positions
in the company. A successful career development program requires a
long-term organizational plan, career paths, employee performance
reviews, career counseling, and training and development.
                        • Common levels of business employment are entry, career, specialist,
                           supervisor/management, and executive/entrepreneur. Career paths
exist in all types of businesses. Following career-planning procedures
will help you obtain a job that is both satisfying and rewarding.
