Concepts
The word geometry is formed from the Greek words geo, meaning Earth, and metron, meaning measure.
9.6 Congruent and Similar Triangles
Geometry literally means to measure the Earth. In this chapter we learn about various geometric figures and their
properties such as perimeter, area, and volume. Knowledge of geometry can help us solve practical problems in
real-life situations. For instance, knowing certain measures of a circular swimming pool allows us to calculate how
much water it can hold.

pipe. In addition, the snow must be carefully prepared and packed.
Throughout this chapter, we work with lines, angles, circumferences, and other
geometric concepts that give us an appreciation of the work that goes into con-
structing a halfpipe.
