48 TODAY’S BUSINESS COMMUNICATION

                                   Bearing Good News

One of the most pleasurable responsibilities of a business communicator
is that of conveying good news. Taking the opportunity to congratulate,
reward, or acknowledge individuals’ accomplishments is a fantastic way
to build positive relationships inside and outside the workplace. Both
of us have received tenure at our respective academic institutions. For
those who don’t know, tenure is a treasured, honored accomplishment for
university faculty members. It doesn’t come without a great deal of hard
work, talent, and sacrifice, plus a little touch of good luck. When we were
awarded tenure, we each received the same form letter from our respective
universities. It was short, institutional, impersonal, and legalistic. What a
disappointment! When you have the opportunity to bear good news, do
so with enthusiasm, charm, and lavish praise. The following is an example
                of what we recommend.
