52 TODAY’S BUSINESS COMMUNICATION
Writing a Message of Congratulations
Just as much fun as conveying good news is the opportunity to congratu-
late people on significant accomplishments, career milestones, marriages,
the birth of children, and so forth. We both believe these messages go
a long way toward maintaining positive relationships in business. Don’t
limit these messages to your colleagues in your workplace. Look for oppor-
tunities to send these messages to people with whom you are building or
maintaining a professional relationship within your career network.

Dear Ms. Sherazod—
Congratulations on your recent selection as “Business Woman of the
Year.” The article in the Hartford Business Gazette about your receiving
this tremendous honor was a terrific piece of journalism, and it cer-
tainly explained clearly why you were chosen. Your generous support
of the Fund to Fight World Hunger is just as impressive as your 2-year
turnaround of the Acme Automobile Manufacturing Co. Taking such
a large firm from red to black ink in just 2 years is spectacular.
Best wishes for continued success at Acme, and thank you for
setting such a wonderful example for young business professionals
everywhere. Just thinking about the way you are able to do right by
your shareholders, while helping people who are less fortunate, all
while also being an engaged and involved mother to three growing
boys leaves me (and probably most men) exhausted.
Warm regards,
