ARTICLES
To complement this brief and further prepare for our meeting on September 10, you should have
received PDFs to these articles. These are studies we thought would provide you with a richer context
and deeper understanding for the issues we will discuss at our meeting. Below is a brief description of
each study.
McKinsey Global Institute: The Future of Work in America
Using data from 315 US cities and more than 3,000 US counties, this study revealed that the US is a
mosaic of local economics with widening gaps in between. While there could be positive net job growth at
a national level, new jobs may not appear in the same places, and the types of occupations in demand are
changing.
Accenture and the Aspen Institute: Advancing Missing Middle Skills
This study found that the need for human skills in jobs is on the rise, with emerging roles requiring a higher
level of human skills (e.g. creativity, complex reasoning and socio-emotional skills).
ThredUp: “2019 Resale Report”
This report analyzed trends in resale, including demographic changes. It found that an increasing number
of people are buying secondhand, and the resale market is predicted to grow to $51 billion by 2023.
World Economic Forum: “The Future of Jobs Report 2018”
This study reports on the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on the current work landscape. New
categories of jobs are emerging that are partially or wholly displacing others. The skills required for jobs is
accelerating in most industries and transforming how and where people work. This report provides in-
depth information on the magnitude of these trends by industry and geography.
