Trey Canard entered Detroit looking to conquer the venue that knocked him out of the series last year. He
got off to a quick start in qualifying practice notching the 4th quickest time only three tenths of a second
off of pole sitter Marvin Musquin. Canard looked hungry to contend as they geared up for the night show.
Canard sling-shotted out of the gate in his heat race and got himself right behind early leader Ken Roczen. Instead of being content and letting the race develop, Canard let it all hang out through the vicious whoop section and then railed the 180 degree turn right around the outside of Roczen. It was an impressive move and it secured him the lead. From there on out, he would hold off the feisty German all the way until the end securing a big heat race win.
Canard had a fantastic start in his heat race but could not get another one in the main event. He would get pinched off and enter the first turn in dead last. He would sneak to the inside to get a few spots but the damage was done and he came around lap one in a bleak 14th place. Canard felt comfortable on the technical Detroit course and quickly started making moves. He worked into 8th place by the halfway point getting by some tough competition. Shortly after that, he would attempt to pass Blake Baggett for 7th but would get bumped into some tough blocks and tip over. It was more bad luck for Canard but he regained his composure and put on another charge. He remounted in 12th and rallied back up to the 8th place spot where he would finish the race. Yet another frustrating main event for Canard but his speed definitely looks back up to par. If he gets a start at the next round, he could be a threat for the win.
