Mitchell’s day started off a tad slower than usual in Santa Clara. He showed speed but was only able to come away with 11th in the first free practice. He showed more confidence in the next rounds of practice and it looked like he had the track dialed. He was able to qualify a strong 9th and went into the night show ready to back up his Texas finish of 5th. In 250 Heat
2, Mitchell got off to good start, getting through the first rhythm section in 4th place. With an excited Cooper Webb behind him, Mitchell did everything he could to keep his momentum going forward but would eventually lose the position to the champ. The pass jarred him a bit as another rider also got past him. He would settle for 6th and head to the Main looking for redemption. Mitchell got off to a mediocre start in the Main Event and found himself in 11th after the first lap. By lap 4, he was able to make some bold passes on two riders and was sitting in 9th. He had his sights set on 8th and around lap 10, he made the pass and also picked up another position due to a downed rider. He now sat in 7th with 6 laps to go to go. Then he was able to make another pass on Colt Nichols for 6th. The top 5 was within reach and he wanted it bad. Fortunately for Mitchell, Cunningham made a mistake that allowed him to slip by into the 5th position with 3 laps to go. With
a lot of pressure from Colt behind him, Mitchell gave it everything he could and was able to snag the top 5 finish. This finish
would move him into 6th in points going into Vegas.
