“You know,” the King whispered, “Very few of them have ever had the Queen’s cooking and on some of those occasions the cooking was quite awful.”
I could tell that the King was mighty confused. He turned to the Peddler and asked, “What is occurring with the changing of the shades?”
“In the past, without the glasses, what would have happened?” asked the Peddler. The King thought for a moment and said, “The ones who agreed with me and therefore were my friends, would become black and those who disagreed with me would have become white, because they were no longer my friends.” “With the glasses, Your Majesty, the shades you see mean many things,” confided the Peddler.
“Some of your advisors who have never tasted the Queen’s cooking are agreeing with you and some that have tasted it and disliked it are also agreeing with you. Others who have tasted her cooking and did not like it are not agreeing with you and some who never tasted her cooking are not agreeing with you. And others who have tasted the cooking and liked it, are not agreeing with you because they know others who cook better and you said the Queen was the best.”
“Stop, stop!” demanded the King. “This is too confusing, too many variations, too many choices and I don’t understand.”
