Even more curious was the fact that the King would seek the advice of those he had previously ignored because they had done something to make him angry and therefore had become “wrong colored.” People marveled at the wisdom of the King’s edicts and predictions.
More quietly, there was talk of how favored advisors were no longer consulted, even though it was well known that to the King they were “right colored.”
One morning the Peddler came to the King’s room and said, “Your Majesty, the time has come for me to complete my mission here. If you are satisfied that I told you truthfully about the glasses, grant me my wish. Otherwise, I will leave this Kingdom forever.”
“Indeed, indeed,” said the King, “I knew this day was coming. I am pleased with the glasses, how could I not be. I am being proclaimed as the wisest King ever and my subjects hang on my every word. You and your glasses have shown me much and I gladly grant any request.”
The Peddler smiled as he approached the King with a very formal looking piece of parchment paper. “Why, this is a declaration,” said the King, who then read it to himself. “As your King and ruler, I hereby proclaim that from this day forward all subjects of this realm shall wear a pair of the King’s Glasses.”
