“Why are you complaining?” the King demanded. “The glasses will help you see life as it truly is, not as you think it should be. You will be able to make better decisions about all manners of things. Life will be infinitely more interesting!” The King was so moved that he almost shouted.
“But your majesty,” the small woman said, “we don’t want that.” “What do you mean, not want that? Not be wise? What manner of foolishness is this?” demanded the King. “But Your Majesty, without the glasses life was more simple. We always knew what was right and good without having to think about it.”
“Even if sometimes what you saw as right was actually wrong and what you thought was good was, in reality, bad?” the King asked. “Yes,” replied the woman. “We understand your intentions Your Majesty but we want it simple, the way we can understand.”
“But you will make bad choices, dislike things and people you shouldn’t and trust others who do not have your best interest at heart.” The King explained all this with much feeling in his voice. “I can not understand why you would not want this great gift of wisdom,” the King said as he sat heavily in his chair.
The woman looked up at the King and said, “Sire, it is too hard to learn the new way. Even those of us who do understand find it hard work to continue this new way of thinking. The old way was much easier and we wish to go back to it. We would have to change too much in our lives.”
