Te Aitanga a Tumoana
to some accounts the conflict ended with Titore's death in early June 1837, but it is not clear
whether he died from illness or battle wounds.
Despite his death, Titore still 'signed' Te Tiriti o Waitangi: Hakiro, the son of Tareha and successor
to Titore, spoke on his behalf and signed the Waitangi sheet with the words 'mo Titore kua mate'
(for Titore, who has died). Refer RIN10084.

died on 12 Apr 1856 and was buried in Kaitaia Churchyard under the site of the alter of
the raupo church. The cause of his death was toxaemia from erysipelas (aggressive
streptoccal infection). Other names for Nopera were Noble and Tuwhare.

Rangatira o Te Rarawa; Panakareao was an influential leader of Te Paatu
hapu of Te Rarawa. At the time of his birth his father, Te Kaka, was involved
in intertribal wars. Driven from Oruru, near Mangonui, Te Kaka fled towards
North Cape. While making his way through heavy bush, he became entangled in
supple-jack vines, but managed to extricate himself. He later found refuge at
Manawa-tawhi (Three Kings Islands). In commemoration of his escape, Te
Kaka called his son Panakareao (spurned by the supple-jack). Known to Nopera (Artist Image)
Pakeha as Noble or Nopera, Panakareao was sometimes called Tuwhare by his
own people. He was taking a leading role in the affairs of Te Paatu and Te
Rarawa before the 1830s, while his father was still alive.
