1847, and died on 12 Oct 1910 aged about 63. The cause of his death was Leprosy like
illness. Another name for Piri was Piri Kote Kote.
Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from "Boroughdale Murray, the
beginning of a NZ dynasty"et al) Piri William Murray; was born with a
slight speech impediment, he lived since the time of his baptism at Waikuku on
the north east of North Cape, Murimoto. In those days Piri lived alternatively Piri William Murray
between Waikuku, Paua Takapakura, Spirits Bay and mainly at Te Hapua as
the season demanded growing crops of kumara, potatoes and watermelons. He
was close to Annie Yates (Ngawini) who died seventeen days after Piri, having pined that much for
him. Ngawini came to get Piri just before he died and took him back to Paua to care for him. He died
not long afterwards, from a leprosy like illness, which caused the lower half of his face to become
                          eaten away.
Piri marena Mereana Reihana Wahanui Kingi [507] [MRIN: 170], daughter of
Reihana Wahanui Rupapera [6075] and Mereana Hakaraia [6076].
Rapunga Kupu Akoako: (korero taken from "Boroughdale Murray, the
beginning of a NZ dynasty") Mereana Reihana Wahanui Kingi; was a
small woman with a big heart, kind and always smiling. Great tributes were
paid to her in passing by one and all, both Maori and Pakeha. Their old
homestead was where today the step climbs to the cemetery at Te Hapua.
There is a path called Te Tuku O Mereana on Taumataroa, where it is said she
died and the kaumatuas said a prayer to let her spirit depart. As they came near Mereana Kingi
Spirits Bay, she came too and let out a whistle, so they called the place Te
                          Whio.
