Rapunga Kupu Akoako: Ponaute Busby; Private #25823 28th Maori Battalion,
was the eldest son of Haimona and Rihi. He enlisted on 10April1940 and Ponaute Puhipi
embarked on 8Nov1940 to Egypt arriving 12Dec1940. He was captured in Crete
around June1941, later ending up in Germany around Dec1941 as POW #5443 at
Stammlager 344. During his captivity he fell victim to multiple bayonet wounds inflicted by the
German guards. He was also tried on assault charges against the German guards but eventually
acquitted of all charges. He also remembered the Germans could not understand who the Maoris
were, they found they could not intimidate them as easily as they could other prisoners, they were
also taken aback when the Maoris performed the haka.
For the Allies, the campaigns in Greece and Crete were disasters, doomed by inadequate planning,
lack of air support and often poor leadership. For the Mâori and other New Zealand troops it was a
tough introduction to modern warfare, but one they had faced with discipline, skill and courage.
After the end of the war Bon was evacuated to England and then boarded the last ship back to New
Zealand on 18June1945 arriving in Wellington on 19July1945, he was discharged on 31July1946. He
was issued the 1939-45 Star, the Africa Star, the War Medal 1939-45 and the NZ War Services
                          Medal for his service.
Bon would often spend time helping out the family on the farm at Kumeu. He eventually embraced
and enjoyed a "healthy lifestyle", developing a passion for jogging.
