For all jobseekers in general, especially new entrants to the labour market, the outlook is very positive. Over the past 24 months
companies have worked hard to reinvent themselves in order to be relevant in the businesses of tomorrow. New operating models
have emerged that has resulted in new ways of working requiring renewed capabilities. Team compositions to leverage a ‘we’ mind
shift in diverse and inclusive teams has replaced the old ‘me’ ideals. Inclusive leaders will need to embrace the full diversity of future
workforces through the creation of safe workspaces where employees feel accepted and empowered to contribute. 2022 will be full
of challenges and purpose-led opportunities. The level of success is now dependent on how ready and prepared you are to accept
these opportunities. Here are a few steps and tips to help optimize your job search experience.
1) Establish and manage your expectations. What is your dream job? Do you have the skillsets to perform reasonably well at it
today? What gaps or learning opportunities do you have? What are your drivers and motivations? Invest the time in understanding
and articulating what you want for a career and what needs you may have in order to be successful in obtaining that career. For
example, it would be unrealistic to apply for a career as a lawyer without completing a law degree. Formulate your unique ‘story’
and be ready to share it authentically. A great source to learn how to structure a good story can be found in Paul Smith’s book,
“Lead with a story”. The step in creating a good story starts with a hook; why should someone listen to your story. Then it
transitions into the content of your story, challenge, conflict, and resolution. A good story concludes with the lesson that was
learned and actionable outcomes. Once you have your story and know what your targets are, you able to prepare for and set
reasonable timelines to properly job search. Note that interviewing processes may take up to 3 months, if not more. Therefore, do
not be discouraged by this! A few tips to help expedite timelines are
a) Do your research and narrow your search parameters to a short list of companies or roles you’re interested in.
b) Leverage your networks - I will elaborate more on this in the next step and
c) Align your capabilities and values to the job description before applying for it.
