Confidence
Growing up in the U.S. was not the easiest thing for me. I was exposed to blatant
racism, prejudice, bigotry and classism. While attending a military school, an
instructor began to question me. I had been in attendance for about 3 days and
was quite attentive. I took good notes but was reluctant to respond.
“Soldier, where are you from?” With divorced parents I always picked California
or Florida as my home. “It don’t matter. Just listen.” He was so cool. Besides, I
had only been in the Army for about a year. “I been watchin’ you and I’m
disappointed.” I was confused about his feelings. “Man, you got it! You are
smart. Why are you holdin’ back. Stop being afraid. Somebody told you lies about
yourself and you believed them. Remember – they told you lies. So, when you
come back next week, don’t bring that same person back here.”
The instructor was so right about me. I had learned how to dumb down while
living in the South. I didn’t scratch and bow my head or draw in the sand with my
shoes, but I was limited due to my experiences. Regardless, I had had people like
this instructor propel me throughout my life. Without them, I would have given
up a long time ago.
I had no idea that I would ever have the confidence to permanently leave the
what most foreigners consider to be the best country in the world. Of course, I
have issues that I share freely, but I do not hate the United States of America.
And my suggestion for you to travel are only to assist you in broadening your
perspective.
I am sure that you have been told a lot of lies. Those same lies damaged your
confidence. The following information should give you something to
contemplate in terms of improving your image.
