7.2.15 Service Hoist
KFTL DUE DILIGENCE ā Kingston, Jamaica
7.2.14 Diverter Unit (Rollers)
a) A number of HV cable diverter units have been replaced on some cranes due to their poor condition.
b) On Cranes K to N however, the condition of these diverter units is poor, with sensors malfunctioning, corroded and seized rollers, and cable and cable gland exposed allowing water ingress, into āJā boxes.
c) These are older design units; consideration should be given to their replacement with modern European designed units.
a) Service hoists and lifting devices on the cranes are in many cases not functioning as designed. These units often incur breakdowns when required to be used, adversely affecting maintenance activities.
b) A survey of all the service hoists should be conducted by KFTL personnel, a list of the defect produced in Champs, so that work orders are issued for an action plan to ensure all these are functioning over the coming 12 months.
c) The service hoists should be tested as per the requirements of the local regulations.
7.2.16 Storm Pins & Tie Downs
a) The condition of the storm pins and tie down is below acceptable. For a geographical zone which is regularly subjected to cyclones, securing of the cranes should be a high priority and these two systems should be at peak level.
b) As a rule, and as a minimum, cranes should be storm pinned when not in use.
c) On one crane it was observed that the insertion of one of the storm pin was lowered and raised manually with the use of a chain.
d) Storm pins and tie downs should be returned to a sound operation condition as a matter of urgency.
d) example of
components which will cause premature wear and failure and be the source of some reliability issues.
