MIDPOINT FORMULA
The coordinates of the midpoint of the line segment joining the points A(x 1, y 1) and B(x 2, y 2) in the
xy-plane are given by
x x y y
C 1 2 , 1 2
2 2
Proof:
Ex: Find the coordinates of the midpoint of [AB] If
i) A(2,7) and B(4,1) ii) A(-3,7) and B(5,-1)
Ex: If M(3,2) is the midpoint of the segment [AB] where A(x+2,3) and B(8, y-1), find the values of x
and y.
Ex: Let A(3, 6) and B(2t+1, 4) be two points. If the mid-point of [AB] is equidistant to both of
the axes, find the possible values of t.
