                  The distance between any two points P (x 1, y 1) and Q(x 2, y 2) in the xy-plane is given by








                  Proof: As it is seen in the figure, the distance between P and Q is the length of the segment [PQ]

                  and |PR|= x 2 – x 1 and |QR|= y 2 – y 1 .
