I say ‘Hoop’ to them so as they progress they associate the word with
what they are doing.
Also, when you are teaching what to do, keep your arm out stretched
or they may well return to your side and miss the hoop.
Another help,
especially when
moving on to multiple
hoops and getting your
dog to work with a bit
of distance between
you, is to use a target
they like to go to.
Mine love standing
with 2 paws on a small
step, one of their party
pieces, but for
example, you could
use a towel with a treat on it as an end point.
Once a single hoop is mastered,
you can start adding more…
…and change the pattern, such
as making the hoops into a
weave.
I also add in “ stop and wait “
points and tunnels as they
progress.
The important point is for both of
you to have fun and remember to
make sure your dog is confident
doing the basics before adding in
distance and too many direction
changes.
