Prescription medication costs are out of control, but getting
better. As with medical treatment, there are many reasons. First
the good. Pharmaceutical companies have been developing
programs to help those without insurance or otherwise financially
burdened. Concurrently, large pharmacies are providing common
drugs (mostly generic versions) at a reduced price. There are also
multiple no-cost private enrollment discount prescription programs.
However, there are many prescriptions that are out of reach without
insurance. One solution has been to order prescriptions from
Canada; however, this is actually illegal.
How can it be cheaper in other countries for the same
prescriptions researched and manufactured in the United States?
Consumers subsidize these much lower prices through the passing
of those losses to the consumer at the retail level. However,
consumers are not the only source of subsidy. These other low-cost
countries are socialist medicine countries and mandate the
pharmaceutical companies agree to a lower rate – similar to bulk
buying wholesale at a warehouse store. Some countries subsidize
any difference between cost to them and cost to the consumer. For
any loss in profit from other countries, the pharmaceutical
companies will pass those losses on to other consumers, such as the
United States. Companies are not keen on profit loss, which is not
