retirement funds, for high-risk investments and corrupt purposes.
Presently there is a call for taxpayers to replace those funds lost to
corruption. This is how our government operates – more taxpayer
funds for government corruption.
The influence and power of the unions in the private sector was
not enough. They infiltrated public sector jobs – those paid by
taxpayers. Two of the largest groups represented by unions are
teachers and federal employers, followed by public safety
employees. It is illegal for public employees to go on strike, in many
states; however, they do. Federal employees cannot. In the 1980’s,
when air traffic controllers thought they might test this law – they
were warned and summarily terminated en masse. It was the last
time a unionized federal employee group would challenge the law.
Historically, unions played an important and significant role in
politics. The early lobbying efforts and political influence is how
unions developed and backed employer contracts became state and
national policies and laws. For example, the Department of Labor
and Department of Education became cabinet positions after
significant influence and lobbying by unions. However, by the time
these departments were created, the work of unions had been
accomplished and the height of scandal and corruption was around
the corner. From the history of unions are policies and laws that
provided for the accomplishments detailed above. These are
significant and not to be forgotten or unappreciated by all of the
workers of today. Public safety agencies, by the nature of their
duties and jobs, are often exempt from some of these workplace
conditions other workers enjoy, such as eight-hour days and forty-
