Lessons Learned – 20 Years After Murder on a Sunday Morning (Adam Tebrugge, Esq.)
Murder On a Sunday Morning – Academy Award Winning Documentary
(forwarded by Eddie McClain – from Brian McGuinness, CLI – NCISS Past Presidents)
“An Academy Award winning film was made of Pat's defense of a 15-year old boy wrongly accused of murder. The film is
titled "Murder On A Sunday Morning." I have seen it and it is riveting.” – Eddie McClain

This article was recently shared and is very relevant to our profession. Earlier this year Florida defense attorney Pat
McGuinness passed away after a long battle with cancer. This documentary was 20 years ago and the murder was in
May of 2000. This was brought to the attention of NCISS by Pat’s brother, Brian a fellow CLI / criminal defense
investigator. The lessons from this case may be 20 years ago – and they are with us today and our future. Steve Kirby
(retired, Edward R. Kirby & Associations – IL; and investigator in “Making a Murderer” appeals) had this to say, “I
watched it just yesterday on YouTube -- it is a riveting story, but more importantly to us as a profession - shows the
importance of pre-trial investigation.” – we strongly agree.

Thanks to Brian for sharing this article about your late brother Pat.

Belted or Unbelted? That is the Question!
(Aaron (Al) Duncan II, ACTAR – Warren Forensic Engineering – SC)
Did the driver or passenger do what they could do to protect themselves by wearing their seatbelt? There are ways to
determine if the safety belt was being used. When EMS arrives on the collision scene and finds an injured occupant
belted in the vehicle, they typically don’t unlatch the belt to remove them from the seat; they cut the webbing.

Note: This is one of the first points of inspection we check for and document on a vehicle. It is important to know the
evidence indicating if the seatbelt was worn or not, latched or not, and activated or not. – Dean and Karen

Sitcom Actress Murdered; Death Prompts Anti-Stalking Legislation (07/18/1989)
(this event was instrumental in CA passing the first DPPA and most restrictive access to driver license / motor vehicle
records; and later federal and other states DPPA laws)

On July 18, 1989, the 21-year-old actress Rebecca Schaeffer is murdered at her Los Angeles home by Robert John Bardo,
