Evidence Inspection & Documentation - AFI-LLC Newsletter August 2021

The interest in being an investigator began years ago. As a teen I would read those magazines we weren’t supposed to
read that my grandmother thought she had hidden. Remember the True Detective magazines?

The years passed and I tried my hand at different careers along the way, plugging along in life, raising children, and
scraping by to make ends meet like any other American.

Then in 1991, through mutual friends, I met Dean Beers. It turned out Dean was a process server and I had actually paid
him to serve papers on someone through my attorney. Small world. I didn’t know much about service of process,
however, I thought it was interesting, nonetheless. Then I discovered how intelligent Dean was and that he was great at
skip tracing too. Not to pat myself on the back, however, I will since I did help to convince Dean to rebrand his business
        into Investigations.

I watched for years in amazement and secretly wanted to do what Dean did or at least help. And in 1996, I joined him in
the investigative business. Since then, we have worked numerous cases together as private investigators in our own
business as well as death investigators through our county coroner’s offices. We mostly focus on equivocal death cases
now and any case we receive we first work separately, then come together to compare our thoughts and ideas. Most of
the time we agree, however, there are times when we see things differently and then we work through the case
together to see what we may have missed.

Working as an investigator has been both interesting and rewarding. As long as my brain functions, I will continue to
work in the investigative world. Had it not been for that meeting in 1991, I may have missed out on the opportunity to
use the inquisitive, investigative part of me. I no longer have the desire to take washing machines apart to see how they
work, I’m just happy knowing they do.

I was working at a family grocer since high school. In 1987, age 20, I could see the future was short and I wanted a
different path. I thumbed the yellow pages until he came across 'Detectives' and was interviewed a couple times. In a
bad economy, no luck - so I formed Investigative Services of Colorado 10/01/1987 and visited every law office in town.
The store went bankrupt a few months after the first PI Day. I met Karen in 1991, and not long after she pushed me to
focus on investigations and not the process serving I was mostly doing – she pushed, I listened and she has been my
strongest guide since; I remember the conversation vividly. About the time of the first PI Day is also about that time
Karen joined the agency – formally at least, in mid-1996. Today we still have some of those first clients - most are
retired, some on to judges. One of our first clients is going to retire (or try again) by the end of this year. This will mark
        34 years.
