The Repair / Replacement of Tissues Stage

Once the body gets the correct electrical and

chemical signals, it begins to repair the tissue. The

time needed for repair depends on a number of

factors. Obviously,the amount of damage is one of

them. The general state of health and age of the

patients is another.

The type of tissue is also important for healing

supply. Tissues like muscle which have a direct

blood supply heal in weeks. Tissues like tendons,

ligaments and vertebral discs which do not have a

direct blood supply take months to more than a

year to fully heal. Fairly simple tissues, like bone,

heal in weeks. Complex tissues like nervous tissue,

take months to heal if they heal at all. (It should be

noted that the body has an amazing capacity to heal

beyond expectations and continues to both surprise

and bewilder us.)
