Chapter 9
Process technology
Process technology can be used to increase the efficiency of operations
management. Examples include:
Computer integrated A combination of CAD and CAM. The system directs
manufacturing (CIM) data flows and processing/ movements of materials.
Flexible Automated system capable of producing a huge
manufacturing number of parts in a flexible manner, reacting to both
systems (FMS) predicted and unpredicted changes.
Design produced by CAD is converted into numbers
Computer numerical which control the exact movements of the machine
control (CNC)
allowing the creation of any pattern or shape.
Automated guided Fully automated transport systems using unmanned
vehicles (AGV) vehicles.
Widely used in manufacturing, for example in
Robots
assembly, movement and quality inspection.
Decision support
systems (DSS) and As discussed in Chapter 6.
expert systems
Material
requirements A computerised system for planning the requirements
planning (MRP) of raw material, work-in-progress and finished goods.
