Chapter 9

               7.7 5-S practice

Often part of a Kaizen approach, the 5-S practice aims to achieve
an organised, clean and standardised workplace.

The five Ss are Japanese words that can be easily translated and understood.

               7.8 Six Sigma

 Aims to reduce the number of faults to less than 3.4 per one million units
                     produced.

 This error rate correlates to the sixth sigma of probability.

               7.9 Statistical process control

                Similarities to Six Sigma

 Used when a large number of similar items are produced.

 Control limits are set (for example, the product’s target weight) and all points
outside the control limits are investigated and corrective action taken.
