               8.1   Introduction



                                Lean management is a philosophy that aims to systematically
                                eliminate waste through the identification and elimination of all
                                non-value adding activities.  Wastes include:

                                     inventory
                                     waiting

                                     defective units
                                     effort or motion
                                     transportation

                                     over-processing

                                     over-production.
