Answers to supplementary objective test questions

Lean manufacturing is closely associated with JIT production. In lean
manufacturing, production is initiated by customer demand (demand-pull) and
products are made to order. Production should either be a continuous work
flow, if there is continuous demand, or in small batch sizes. The ideal batch size
is 1 – the customer’s order. Large batches are not produced, because these
create unwanted inventory.
There should be small work cells, with all the equipment needed to make the
product and all the necessary labour skills: work cells in a small area that do all
the work on a product eliminate waste from motion, transportation and waiting.
Workers need to be multi-skilled, so that they can switch from one task to
another as the situation requires.
