                  MANAGEMENT (E2) PRACTICE TASKS

                  TASK 1 – RISK

                  To: CFO
                  From: Director of Operations
                  Date: Today
                  Subject: Risk

I have read the recent press article in the Centralia Daily News with dismay.

I fully understand that the bus in question was 22 years old and therefore “exempt” from seat
belt legislation but this seems an excuse rather than a valid, justifiable reason for the
consequences of the accident. One of our stated strategic aims is to provide safe, reliable,
customer‐centred transport services and as such we must be absolutely sure of consistency and
completeness in our approach to risk.

Additionally, given the environmental pressures on all transportation companies (which is only
likely to become more intense) we will consider the use of new technology such as driverless
vehicles and we have to be sure that all potential risks are recognised. Based, on the above I am
concerned that we must have a robust risk management system and appropriate mitigation
policies in place. Failure to do so will have a major effect on the reputation and brand of Menta.

In advance of the next board meeting, where we can we discuss this in more detail; can I have
your views in terms of best practice in risk management? Similarly if we are found wanting in this
key area please can you provide some idea how any new systems or processes could be
                  introduced?

                  Simon
