3.2 Belbin’s team roles theory
Belbin suggested that, in order for a team to operate
effectively, it needed a balance of nine different roles.
Leader Mature, confident. Good chairperson. Clarifies
(Co-ordinator) goals/delegates well.
Shaper Challenging, dynamic. Thrives on pressure. Promotes
activity.
Plant Creative and thoughtful. Solves problems/generates
ideas.
Monitor- Strategic and discerning. Sees all options/good judge.

Team worker Co-operative, perceptive and diplomatic. Listens/averts
friction within the team.
Resource- Outgoing and enthusiastic. Explores opportunities and
investigator develops contacts.
The Implementer or Company Worker is practical,
Implementer reliable and efficient. Turns ideas into action/organises
work to be done.
Completer Conscientious and anxious. Searches out errors and
Finisher omissions. Delivers on time.
Specialist Knowledgeable, self-starting and dedicated. Provides
(expert) knowledge and skills in rare supply.
