Individual, group and team behaviour

3.3 Tuckman’s stages of group development

Team members are simply a collection
of individuals, unsure of their roles.
                                FORMING

                                                                        Team members challenge
                                                                        the manager’s authority
                                               STORMING resulting in conflict and
                                                                        tension.

The norms under which the team
               will operate are established and

               team relationships become NORMING
                 settled.

At this stage the team is capable

of operating at full capacity. PERFORMING

If a team remains for a long time at the performing
stage there is a danger that it starts to lose DORMING/
efficiency. It is often best to ‘dorm’ or adjourn the

team or make changes to the team membership. ADJOURNING
