RISK MANAGEMENT (P3) PRACTICE
TASKS
EXERCISE 1
UPDATE
Den Rice, Chief Financial Officer, has just called you into his office. He asks you to sit down and
hands you his tablet. It has an extract from Twitter showing a series of tweets from a journalist
employed by FNG responding to members of the public who have been taking part in a recent
government programme that FNG has been involved in.
TRIGGER
“Have you seen these?
I’m not sure if everyone knows but the Borland government has been running a campaign to
improve literacy; FNG is taking part with some of our journalists running workshops about how
they write stories. It is additional work and done outside of their normal work assignments. We
took part to try and raise interest in the FNG brand and publications to make sure the journalists
of tomorrow don’t get lost.
Wilma is one of our most respected journalists, her manager says she is very sorry for her tweets
and says she has been under pressure with the additional work; she feels the Borland government
did not give her much time to prepare for his session. Unfortunately, I think Guy Lomas is furious
that this initiative has backfired and wants to take the most severe action possible.
Wilma’s manager pointed out to me that while we have ethical guidelines, we do not provide any
training on social media, nor do we have any policy on staff usage of social media.
Please could you prepare a briefing note for me to present to the board? I’d like to look into a few
things for me.
What are the ethical issues we need to consider in relation to the incident, both from FNG’s
perspective as the employer and from the employee’s perspective?
Social media is something that is part of everyday life, but I think Guy would like to ban its use at
FNG after this. I need some information from you on the benefits to FNG of using social media as
a business communication tool.
