Borland Government takes first action against fake news
Yesterday saw the Government publish its findings after a lengthy review into the issue of fake
news. It is at this stage just some guidance, but experts are saying that it is a step in the right
direction.
The Government had set up an action group, with representatives from various sources including
technology companies (Facebook & Twitter), Journalists (TJ Publishing, Nuncia and FNG) and
researchers (fact checkers Snopes and Poynters). The group met several times between March
and June to come up with the final report.
The key points from the report highlight making online news more transparent, the development
of tools to help both users of news and journalists tackle falsification, promoting research on the
impact of falsification, and improving media literacy in Borland.
One of the most important aspects in the communication is that no hard regulations are to be
introduced. A representative for the Government commented “We felt the primary importance of
freedom of the Press and emphasizing the need for a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach to
falsification problems is a core value we must promote.”
