Chapter 10

                      FINANCIAL STRATEGY (F3)

                      PRACTICE TASKS

                      EXERCISE 1

                      UPDATE

You arrive at work on a Monday morning to find a note from Den Rice, Chief Financial Officer, on
your desk. He has asked you to meet him in his office at 09.00, to discuss the contents of an email
he has received from Colin Edgar (one of the FNG Non-Executive Directors).

                      TRIGGER

                      “Hi there.

On Friday I received this email from Colin. I’ve printed it out so that you’ve got a copy (see
                      reference materials).

He wants to come in and meet me in the next day or so to discuss these issues. The trouble is that
I’m tied up with the auditors today so I don’t have time to prepare anything to discuss with him
when he comes in. I remember some of this terminology from my CIMA exams that I passed many
years ago, but I’m a bit rusty on the detail!

To help me out, I’d like you to prepare some briefing notes for me on the two key points he raises.

First, could you explain what the GRI’s G4 guidelines are, and how we could use them to present a
good impression of FNG’s corporate social responsibility position.

Second, please remind me what the Balanced Scorecard headings are, and explain whether you
think we could use the Balanced Scorecard to improve the KPIs that we use for FNG.

This is quite urgent – Colin suggested in his email that he might come in to see me very soon this
week to discuss these points. Could you please try to get the briefing notes to me by lunch time?”
