SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS
policy we will have towards sharing access, if we allow a subscriber to log in from an unlimited
number of devices we would be allowing them to share access to friends and family as they would
with a newspaper. This could limit the number of subscribers that FNG get, and therefore limit the
success of a venture that is aimed at increasing the revenue generated.
Another issue is the right to respond, at present any member of the local community could write a
letter to one of our titles to share their excitement or frustrations about local events, or online if
there is a comments section then readers have the right to reply to an article that we write. If we
introduce a paywall, particularly a hard paywall we are limiting the ability of the local community
to respond or share their views. It means that only those that can afford to meet the subscription
fee have a voice, or that their voice is louder.
Conclusion
As you rightly say, this does seem an interesting business opportunity, but the board must
carefully balance the need to act for the local community with the need to - not just - generate
returns for our shareholders, but also remain a going concern in these tough operating conditions
that our industry faces.
