7.3 Modern techniques
McDonaldization
This is aimed at both minimising costs and making them predictable. It has four
dimensions:
efficiency
calculability
control
predictability.
Diagnostic Related Groups (DRG)
Defined as ‘systems for classifying patient care by relating common characteristics
such as diagnosis, treatment and age to an expected consumption of hospital
resources and length of stay’.
It provides an expected/standard cost for each treatment that is used by insurers to
pay hospitals for treatments.
