Chapter 1

3.2 The role of the strategic management accountant

Strategic management accounting is a form of management accounting in
which emphasis is placed on information which relates to factors
external to the organisation, as well as non-financial information and
                           internally generated information.

The strategic management accountant will therefore produce information as needed
by management to help support their business decisions. This may include (but is not
               limited to):

                competitor analysis

                customer profitability analysis

 product decisions – pricing, portfolio analysis, brand analysis

 investment decisions – acquisitions, disposals, mergers, strategic management
                     systems.

The strategic management accountant’s role is different to that of a traditional
management accountant as it is more forward looking and has a more external focus.
