               2.3 Sources of stakeholder power

When considering the level of power that stakeholders have within the
Mendelow matrix (see previous page), five main sources of power can be
                           identified:

 positional power – an individual’s position within the hierarchy of
                                the organisation (their formal power)

 resource power – the individual controls, obtains or creates
                                resources or items of value

 system power – the stakeholder has high visibility or political access

 expert power – the individual has information, knowledge or skills
that are important to the organisation

 personal power – the individual has good communication skills and
a strong reputation (and are usually well liked)
